Two children drowned in floodwaters in separate incidents in Baharchhara union of Chattogram’s Banshkhali upazila today, police said.
The incidents took place in Dokkhin Ilsha village and the Ratnapur area of the union.
One of the victims was identified as Md Ashik, 8, son of Kamal Uddin of Dokkhin Ilsha village. He drowned around 11:30am.
According to police, Ashik went out of his home in the morning and was swept away by a strong current caused by hill runoff. Locals later rescued him from the water, but he had already died.
In the other incident, an 11-year-old child drowned in floodwaters in Ratnapur. The child's identity could not be confirmed immediately.
Confirming the incidents, Banshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Robiul Haque said, "Large parts of the upazila remain inundated. We have received information that two children drowned in separate incidents, but we are still collecting details."
Several upazilas in southern Chattogram have been inundated after five consecutive days of heavy rainfall and hill runoff, leaving hundreds of thousands of people stranded.
Most parts of Banshkhali upazila remain under floodwater.
