Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today expressed hope that the upcoming national parliamentary election would be the most neutral in the country’s history if the 150,000 police personnel deployed perform their duties with professionalism.
He made the remark while addressing the graduation parade of assistant superintendents of police at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.
The adviser said police members must not accept any form of financial benefit from candidates or their agents while on election duty, and are also prohibited from accepting food from representatives of any candidate.
“Police are not the guardians of any political party. They are state employees paid by taxpayers’ money,” he said, adding that the core responsibility of the police is to serve the people and ensure the rule of law.
Referring to election-time responsibilities, Jahangir said peace cannot be established through the use of force alone without gaining public trust. He noted that the police force is fully prepared to conduct the upcoming parliamentary election in a free and fair manner, adding that around 100,000 police personnel have received special training for this purpose.
Mentioning that professional life may involve various pressures and criticisms, the adviser said honesty and patriotism can overcome all obstacles in duty. He called for building a humane and proud police force free from corruption and bias, upholding the sacrifices of the people and the expectations of future generations.
Through the parade of the 41st BCS (Police) batch, which began training on February 15, 2025, a total of 96 trainee officers entered professional service. The parade was commanded by Probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police Dhiman Kumar Mondal.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy Towfik Mahbub Chowdhury, and other senior officials were present at the ceremony.
