Bangladesh Bank has given special concessions in loan rescheduling for raw jute exporters.

According to the new decision, the deadline for submitting applications for defaulted loan rescheduling has been extended to June 30, 2026.

On Sunday (February 22), the central bank's Banking Regulations and Policy Department (BRPD) issued a circular in this regard and sent it to the chief executives of all scheduled banks.

It said that the deadline for raw jute exporters to apply for rescheduling by making a 2% down payment or a lump sum payment against the existing loan as of December 31, 2024 was until December 31, 2025.

However, due to various complications in export activities and market conditions, many entrepreneurs could not apply within the stipulated time.

Considering the ongoing crisis in the sector, it has been decided to extend the deadline by another six months.

The directive states that the customer can apply for rescheduling through the concerned bank by depositing 2% of his classified (defaulted) loan balance. This directive will come into effect immediately.

The central bank said that this directive has been issued in the public interest under the powers conferred by Section 45 of the Bank Companies Act, 1991.

Sources believe that as a result of this initiative, the raw jute exporters in crisis will get an opportunity to regularize their loans and a positive momentum will be created in the export trade.
