An Amar Bangladesh Party candidate contesting the national elections for the Rajshahi 2 constituency has sought administrative protection, alleging threats and attempts to obstruct his election campaign.

Sayeed Noman, who is contesting with the party’s electoral symbol ‘Eagle’, submitted a written application to the district returning officer on Sunday seeking security.

In the application, he claimed that his campaign had been receiving a strong response from voters, particularly young people, and that his electoral position had strengthened in the constituency.

He alleged that a group, unable to sideline him politically, was now conspiring to carry out attacks on him as well as on party leaders and activists.

Noman further claimed that there were attempts to remove him from the race in a manner similar to what he described as the targeting of Inqilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Hadi.

Expressing concern over his personal safety, he requested the administration to ensure security so that he could continue campaigning without obstruction.

Contacted, Noman said that after failing to push him out of the race and realising their possible landslide defeat, his opponents were now trying to eliminate him physically.

‘I have formally informed the authorities. If anything happens to me, the administration will be responsible,’ he said.

However, district returning officer and Rajshahi deputy commissioner Afia Akhter could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts over phone.

Sayeed Noman is among several AB Party candidates in Rajshahi division contesting the polls against nominees of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–led electoral alliance, in apparent deviation from seat-sharing arrangements among alliance partners ahead of the February 12 JS elections.
