Bangladesh Jatiya Dal chairman Syed Ahasanul Huda on Monday dissolved his party and joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party with his party leaders and activists.
The joining ceremony took place at the office of the BNP chairperson in the capital’s Gulshan area, where Ahasanul presented a bouquet of flowers to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He is set to contest the upcoming parliamentary election for the Kishoreganj-5 constituency with BNP’s electoral symbol, the sheaf of paddy.
Congratulating the newcomers, Fakhrul said that Ahasanul Huda and his team had joined the BNP, placing their trust in the leadership of acting chairman Tarique Rahman, upholding the 19-point programme of the party founder, Ziaur Rahman, and showing confidence in chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul hoped that the induction would further strengthen BNP.
BNP is a party that believes in nationalist ideals, he said and added that they had joined the BNP to support the path of democracy at the critical juncture for the country.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan also attended the joining ceremony.
Ahasanul Huda was the coordinator of the 12-Party Alliance, which was a simultaneous movement partner of the BNP.
On December 9, Bangladesh Liberal Democratic Party chairman Shahadat Hossain Selim joined the BNP after dissolving his own party.
Following his joining, BNP announced him as the party’s candidate for the Laxmipur-1 constituency.
Before joining BNP, Selim served as the spokesperson for the 12-Party Alliance.
