Authorities have stepped up security measures across Gopalganj to maintain overall law and order, with five platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployed alongside the district police.

Surveillance and patrols have also been intensified in key areas of the town through coordinated efforts by other law enforcement agencies.

Police sources said additional personnel have been deployed at important roads, intersections, government establishments and public gathering places.

Intelligence surveillance has been strengthened, while round-the-clock patrols are being conducted. Law enforcement agencies have been kept on standby to deal with any situation.

Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner Md Arif-Uz-Zaman told The Daily Star that the BGB deployment was part of its routine operations and not an additional or special measure.

"Alongside ensuring public safety, BGB personnel are performing duties in aid of the civil administration. They have not been deployed separately to mark August 5. This is part of the regular law-and-order maintenance operation," he said.

"The situation remained peaceful from August 1 to 4, and we expect it to remain the same in the coming days. So far, we have received no information or intelligence indicating any untoward incident,” Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Md Habibullah told The Daily Star.

"However, we remain on maximum alert. Members of the BGB, police and APBn are on duty in the field, and all necessary security measures have been put in place," he added.
