A listed criminal died after being hacked by a group of assailants in Jashore town late last night, police said.

The deceased, Jitu, 35, was a resident of Mollapara in the town's Barandipara area, said Jashore Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Mirajul Islam.

According to police, the attack took place around 11:00pm near Phultala Mor in Barandipara. Jitu was allegedly ambushed by a group of unidentified men.

The attackers repeatedly struck him with sharp weapons before fleeing, leaving him critically injured.

After receiving a call through the national emergency service 999, Kotwali police rescued and took him to Jashore General Hospital. As his condition worsened, doctors referred him to Dhaka for advanced treatment. However, he died on the way after the ambulance reached Narail, family members said.

His body has been kept at the hospital morgue and will be handed over to the family after an autopsy and completion of legal formalities, hospital sources said.

Mirajul Islam said Jitu was a listed criminal facing multiple cases, including murder, extortion and assault.

Police suspect the attack was the result of a longstanding rivalry. They are investigating the incident and working to identify and arrest those responsible, he added.
