Mehidy Hasan Miraz has played plenty of important matches for Bangladesh, but few are likely to stay with him quite like the historic Test victory over Australia in Darwin. After starring with both bat and ball, the all-rounder admitted it was a match he would never forget.

“I think this is very special because these conditions,” Miraz told Triple M Cricket after Bangladesh’s nine-wicket victory. “I think I never forget this match because they are a very good team. They are a world-class team at this moment, they’re doing fantastic, and I took five wickets. I never forget this match.”

Miraz was central to Bangladesh’s historic triumph. He scored 65 in the first innings, dismissed Steve Smith on the third day and then claimed 5-66 as Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings.

That left Bangladesh needing only 57 runs to secure their first-ever Test victory in Australia, which they achieved comfortably on the fourth morning.

Yet Miraz was keen to emphasise that the result was the product of a complete team effort.

“I think the boys played really well the first innings,” he said. “I think Hasan, the way he bowled, he took six wickets the first innings.”

Hasan Mahmud’s career-best 6-55 set the tone on the opening day as Australia were dismissed for 198. Bangladesh then turned that advantage into a commanding 228-run first-innings lead after posting 426.

Miraz also praised the batting unit, particularly Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who scored Bangladesh’s first Test century in Australia, as well as Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque.

“Tanzid Tamim hit from the start, and I think Shadman and Mominul, they took the responsibility,” Miraz said. “And the captain, he doing a very good job.”

Miraz’s own 65 proved valuable in pushing Bangladesh’s total beyond 400, but he again shared the credit with the lower order for helping him build his innings.

“At the end I think there is a little bit of a partnership, but Hasan, Taskin and Taijul, they giving me opportunity to get a score,” he said. “Otherwise, if they not giving support, I can’t score.”

Bangladesh’s bowlers then completed the job, with Miraz providing the decisive finishing touch. His five-wicket haul ensured Australia could not turn Cameron Green’s 104 into a competitive target.

For Miraz, however, the significance of the victory goes beyond his own figures.

“I think all over the matches, we have lots of positive things,” he said.
