The government will verify the allegations raised against former president Mohammed Shahabuddin before taking any decision, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman said today.

He also said the government would give due importance to public demand while ensuring that no one was subjected to injustice.

The minister made the remarks while replying to questions from journalists after attending a reception and training workshop for newly enrolled lawyers, organised by the Chattogram District Bar Association. Around 1,054 newly enrolled lawyers participated in the programme.

Responding to a question, Asaduzzaman said, "While we will certainly give importance to public demand, we also do not want anyone to be treated unjustly or wrongly accused. Therefore, we will thoroughly examine the matter and the government will take appropriate action in due course."

Asked whether any legal restrictions were preventing the former president from travelling abroad, he said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the home ministry.

"It is a matter for the home ministry. These are confidential issues, so we cannot publicly disclose who is under a travel restriction and who is not. If there is any such restriction, it will be disclosed at the appropriate time in the interest of national security," the minister said.

Two complaints were filed today with the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) seeking an investigation into the alleged role of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin in crimes against humanity and other alleged human rights violations committed during the July 2024 Uprising.

The country’s 22nd president Shahabuddin resigned from his post on Friday, citing severe health issues. The Cabinet Division yesterday published a gazette notification on his resignation.
