Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today submitted the nomination form of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to the Election Commission (EC) to contest the 23rd presidential election.

A BNP delegation submitted the nomination paper to Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, the returning officer for the presidential election, at the CEC’s office in Agargaon, Dhaka, this afternoon.

BNP Standing Committee member Moyeen Khan signed Fakhrul’s nomination paper as the proposer, while Gayeshwar Chandra Roy signed it as the seconder.

Earlier in the day, BNP today nominated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party’s candidate for the presidential election.

Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman announced the party’s presidential candidate at the start of a high-level meeting of the party held at the Cabinet Division conference room of the secretariat at 12:30pm.

After the announcement, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told reporters that Fakhrul resigned from his posts as the party’s secretary general and member of its standing committee following his nomination.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir serves as the Member of Parliament for the Thakurgaon-2 constituency and has also been serving as the LGRD minister since the formation of the BNP-led government on February 17 of this year, following the party's landslide victory in the February 12 election.
