A special musical gathering titled "Apon Aloy Shahid Mahmud Jangi: Gane Gane Sattor" will be held on 12 December to celebrate the 70-year life and creative journey of renowned Bangladeshi lyricist Shahid Mahmud Jangi, whose contribution shaped the soundscape of the country's band music in the 1980s and 1990s.

Jangi, who turns 70 on 6 February 2026, is best known for writing timeless songs such as "Hridoy kadamatir kono murti noy", "Aaj je shishu prithibir aloy eshechhe", "Ami bhule jai tumi amar now", "Jotiner sirer klase", "Tritiyo Bishwo", and "Shomoy jeno kate na". He has written for legendary bands including Souls, Renaissance and LRB, as well as numerous solo artistes — and continues to write today.

Organised by Ajob Karkhana, the celebration will take place at Russian House, Dhanmondi, starting at 5pm. After opening remarks and recollections shared by invited guests, the event will launch a commemorative book of the same title, "Apon Aloy Shahid Mahmud Jangi: Gane Gane Sattor".

Edited by Joy Shahriar, the book compiles personal memories and tributes from noted musicians including Nakib Khan, Samina Chowdhury, Faisal Siddiqui Bagi, Fuad Nasser Babu, Kumar Bishwajit, Pilu Khan, Nasim Ali Khan, Partha Barua, Liton Adhikari Rintu, Golam Morshed and Bappi Khan.

Live performances of his iconic songs

From 6:30pm, artistes will perform a selection of Jangi's most celebrated songs. Performers include Rafiqul Alam, Nasim Ali Khan, Bappa Mazumder, Pantho Kanai, Suman Kalyan, Joy Shahriar, Kishore Dash, and the bands Souls and Renaissance, among others.
