A local BNP leader was killed and another injured after being attacked with sharp weapons during an arbitration meeting at Nobodoy Bazar in Dhaka’s Adabor on Wednesday night.

Police said the incident occurred around 8:30pm when a dispute from days earlier was being settled at a local shop. During the arbitration, a group of youths armed with knives and machetes attacked Nobodoy Housing unit BNP president Saddam, 35, and general secretary Abul Bashar Badsha, 30, leaving them with severe injuries to their hands, legs, and neck.

Locals rushed the victims to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Later, Badsha succumbed to his injuries at 11:30pm after being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam confirmed.

According to witnesses, the attackers -- identified as Ripon, Nirab, Parvez and Masum -- are members of a local teen gang and followers of Miraj, senior vice-president of ward no 100 BNP.

Police said the dispute began on June 29 when Habibur Rahman, a BNP member, slapped Ripon during a commotion after a FIFA World Cup match, leading to repeated clashes between the two families.

OC Zahidul confirmed the incident, adding that the victims were local BNP leaders. "Efforts are underway to arrest the accused,” he said.
