A leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, allegedly threatened the provost of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall at Rajshahi University over the occupation of two seats at the hall.
Accused Murad Hossain is the president of the hall unit Chhatra Dal who allegedly threatened Professor Md Ataullah, provost of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall, over settling two non-residential students in a room of the dormitory.
According to hall officials and residential students, Murad recently settled two non-residential students in Room 158 of the hall without informing the hall administration.
Having been informed, the provost summoned the two students to his office on Tuesday afternoon, but they did not meet him and left the hall after locking the room.
The hall administration later put another lock to the room.
Professor Ataullah said that he received a threat call from an unknown number between 2:30pm and 3:00pm on Tuesday.
‘The caller identified himself as Murad Hossain and told me that he himself had settled the students in the room,’ said the provost, adding that Murad asked him to reopen the room within 30 minutes, saying that or else he would come and break the lock.
Professor Ataullah further alleged that at one stage of the conversation Murad told him, ‘You will not remain here for long, sir.’
Fearing that the situation might get worse, the provost later ordered removal of the lock.
The provost said that the matter had already been discussed at a meeting of the provost committee, which condemned the incident, and would also be discussed with the vice-chancellor after his return from Pakistan on May 25.
Visiting the hall on Wednesday, this correspondent found the two non-residential students staying in the room.
One of them was identified as Kamruzzaman Apon, a student of the 2024–25 academic session at the Islamic history and culture department, while the other was identified as Jabid from the Arabic department.
Accused Chhatra Dal leader Murad Hossain could not be reached for his comment as his mobile phone was found switched off.
University pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Professor Mohammad Main Uddin said that discipline had recently been restored in the residential halls after a long period which they did not want to get disrupted.
He said that the provost had already informed the vice-chancellor in writing and a decision would be taken after discussions upon his return.
