The Indian government says about 3,100 incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities have taken place across Bangladesh in the 18 months from August 2024 to February 2026.
Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita made the claim in a written response to a question at the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
“The Government of India continuously monitors incidents of attacks against minorities in Bangladesh, including on their homes, properties, businesses and places of worship,” he wrote.
“As per available data from human rights organisations, about 3100 incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities have taken place across Bangladesh from August 2024 till February 2026.”
However, no data was provided to support the claims.
India has raised the issues of minority security and safety to Bangladeshi authorities consistently, Margherita wrote.
“It is the expectation of the Government of India that the Government of Bangladesh will thoroughly investigate these incidents and bring all perpetrators of killings, arson and violence against minorities to justice. The primary responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the Government of Bangladesh.”
The state minister said that Indian missions are ensuring that Indian nationals in Bangladesh are provided help and prompt support. All Indian citizens in Bangladesh can access a 24/7 emergency helpline, while a consular officer has been assigned to address the grievances and concerns of Indian citizens.
The missions regularly engage with Indian community members to address their concerns, he said.
Diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained since a student-led mass uprising toppled the Awami League government in August 2024. Since then, the Indian government has repeatedly raised claims that minorities, particularly Hindus, have been persecuted.
But the former interim government had repeatedly dismissed allegations that such incidents were widespread.
