A sub-assistant engineer of Bangladesh Railway was stabbed to death at Mohakhali in Dhaka today.

The victim was identified as Mamun Mia, 30, of Malihati village under Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh, said police and relatives.

The incident took place around 1:30pm on the third floor of a house near Banani-Mohakhali TV Gate area.

House owner Md Suman told The Daily Star that he heard screams from the third floor and went there to find Mamun lying in a pool of blood. He said Mamun had two stab wounds on his abdomen and his genitals had been severed.

Suman first took him to Gastroliver Hospital as his condition was critical. Later, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was declared dead while undergoing treatment at the DMCH around 7:00pm.

Mamun’s uncle Mokshed Ali Bhuiyan, who came to the hospital after being informed over the phone, said he found Mamun’s body at the hospital but did not know what had happened.

Mamun joined Bangladesh Railway as a sub-assistant engineer on July 1. He did not live in Dhaka and had recently started working in the capital. His wife Shahina Akter, who is seven months pregnant, lives in their village home.

Banani Police Station Inspector (Operations) AKM Moin Uddin said police detained a woman, Beauty Akter, 30, from the house in connection with the killing after receiving information through the national emergency helpline 999.

He said that Mamun and Beauty knew each other and had allegedly been involved in a relationship. Beauty rented the house the previous day, and Mamun went there on Saturday morning.

According to the police official, the killing appears to have stemmed from a dispute in the relationship.
