Police have increased surveillance in front of former Narayanganj mayor Selina Hayat Ivy's house following her release from jail last night -- installing CCTV cameras and deploying plainclothes officers in the area.
Ivy was released around 10:10pm yesterday after spending nearly 13 months in jail in connection with 12 cases filed over murder and attempted murder during the anti-discrimination student movement.
She returned to her ancestral home, “Chunka Kutir” in Narayanganj’s Deobhog area, after being released from Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur.
A large number of police officers remained stationed in front of her residence.
Contacted, Tarek Al Mehedi, additional superintendent of police (crime) of Narayanganj, said, “As a former mayor, we are considering her security arrangements.”
“At the same time, we are monitoring to ensure that she does not get involved in any activities of the banned organisation (Awami League's activities remain banned), and that no one attempts to provoke or mobilise support in her favour under that banner,” he added.
Police personnel in plainclothes have also been deployed in the area for this purpose, he said.
“She can carry out her normal activities while on bail, but cannot take part in any political programme under the banner of the organisation [Awami League],” the official added.
Regarding installation of CCTV cameras, the police official said, “This is not centred only on her house. We have a broader plan to bring Narayanganj under CCTV coverage to curb crime. Around 2,000 cameras will be installed across the district.”
