The police on Friday arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in connection with an alleged attack on the Palashbari police officer-in-charge and his colleagues inside the police station in Gaibandha.
Arrested Mizanur Rahman Mizan, 35, is the secretary of the Palashbari upazila unit of the party’s professionals’ wing, said the police.
Palashbari police OC Khan Sarowar-e-Alam said that Mizan was picked up from his home at Giridharipur village during an early Friday drive by the police and the force’s Detective Branch wing.
He had been listed as an unnamed accused in the case.
According to the police, the attack happened shortly before 10:00pm on March 25 when Mahmudul Hasan Palash, a leader of Jamaat’s youth wing, came to the police station with several other youths and submitted a complaint.
An altercation reportedly broke out between the officer-in-charge and Palash and his companions.
The police alleged that Palash tried to pressure the OC to shut down a shop over an unresolved issue.
Being refused, they attacked him and also assaulted the other police personnel who intervened.
At least nine police members, including a female constable, were injured in the incident.
In connection with the attack, assistant sub-inspector Ruhul Amin filed a case on March 26, naming nine people and accusing 12–13 others as unidentified.
Palash Ahmed, 35, has been made the prime accused in the case.
The police earlier detained Touhidul Islam from the spot and later sent him to jail through a court order.
With the latest arrest, two people were held in the case.
