The government has granted special executive magistracy powers of commissioned officers in the army, navy and air force for nine days until June 30 from today.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification to this effect on Monday evening.
The notification said the order has been issued in the public interest and comes into effect immediately.
The powers will extend to three metropolitan areas and three districts where troops are set to be deployed during the founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Awami League, whose activities remain banned.
The officers will be able to exercise executive magistracy powers in Dhaka, Chattogram and Gazipur metropolitan areas, as well as Narayanganj, Gopalganj and Faridpur districts.
According to the notification, commissioned officers holding the rank of captain and above in the Bangladesh Armed Forces have been granted special executive magistrate powers across the country.
Army officers serving on deputation in the Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have also been vested with the same authority.
The authority has been issued under different sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.
Under the order, designated officers will be able to arrest offenders, disperse unlawful assemblies, conduct searches and take preventive measures to maintain public order.
