A programme to vaccinate stray dogs against rabies and fit them with collars for easier identification has begun in Dhaka, with organisers planning to expand it across the capital.

The initiative was launched in Gulshan on Friday by the Dhaka Animal Welfare Alliance Trust (DAWAT), with support from the Gulshan Society.

Stray dogs in the Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park area were vaccinated and fitted with collars as part of the first phase.

Organisers said the programme would gradually be extended to other parts of Dhaka, reports bdnews24.com.

Gulshan Society and DAWAT President Omar Sadat said the initiative was aimed at protecting both people and animals.

“Vaccination will help protect animals and people alike,” he said.

“The collars will also make it easier for the authorities and local residents to identify dogs that have already been vaccinated.”

Sadat described stray dogs as part of the urban community and said cities should respond to animals through responsible and practical measures rather than fear or cruelty.

“A humane city does not respond to dogs and cats with fear or cruelty, but with responsibility and practical action,” he said.

DAWAT Secretary General Nazneen Hoque also urged city residents to show compassion towards animals.
