A madrasa teacher in Gazipur’sTongi was mobbed by locals and handed over to police yesterday afternoon on charges of attempted rape on a 10-year-old class 4 student.

The accused, Kamruzzaman, 55, of Machimpur area in Tongi, was detained in Nama Bazar slum, where he taught at a local madrasa, confirmed Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arifur Rahman.

Quoting locals, police said the madrasa teacher called the 10-year-old from the same institution out of her classroom and made her sit in a room of a shop. When he attempted to rape her, the girl screamed and fled.

She later informed her family of the incident, following which her family members, with the help of locals, detained the teacher.

On information, police went to the scene and took Kamruzzaman into custody.

The OC said a case would be filed today and the accused would be produced before the court in the afternoon.
