The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has received policy approval to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to address the ongoing crisis in the country.
The approval has been granted for government-to-government (G2G) imports of LPG.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan confirmed matter to media on Sunday night.
He said BPC has been authorized to import LPG and that the corporation’s chairman has already been given verbal instructions to begin the process. A formal letter is being sent.
On January 12, he told Dhaka Tribune that the government had taken all possible steps to tackle the crisis and that there was now only one solution -- the government itself must start importing LPG.
The energy adviser added that the government had held meetings with LPG traders and distributor associations, considering the hardship faced by consumers. However, he said there is no alternative to increasing LPG imports to resolve the crisis.
