Bangladesh prime minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman led central party leaders, activists, and supporters in paying tribute to his father, the party’s founder and former President, Ziaur Rahman, on his 45th death anniversary today.

The prime minister offered Fateha (prayers) and placed floral wreaths at his father’s grave in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at around 11:00 am, marking the occasion with due solemnity.

To commemorate the late leader, the BNP and its associate organisations have organised an extensive eight-day nationwide programme. The commemorative events officially commenced on 25 May and are scheduled to conclude on 1 June.

Ziaur Rahman, who founded the BNP in 1978, was assassinated on 30 May 1981 by a group of disgruntled army officers at the Chattogram Circuit House.
