Load-shedding has eased in Savar after residents endured nearly a week of prolonged power outages during an intense heatwave, according to officials and locals.
Officials of Dhaka Palli Bidyut Samity-1 said the area had a power demand of 422MW against a supply of 400MW as of around 2:30pm today, requiring only 22MW of load-shedding. Dhaka Palli Bidyut Samity-3 said it was receiving its full demand of 307MW.
Power officials said electricity demand was lower due to the weekly holiday but noted that supply had improved significantly since July 1.
Residents said the situation was noticeably better than last week, when some areas experienced eight to 10 hours of daily outages.
"We had only two or three brief power cuts over the past two days, which was manageable," said Bank Colony resident Munni Akter.
However, some residents cautioned that the improvement may partly reflect reduced demand during the holiday.
"The real test will be tomorrow when factories and offices reopen," said Jahangirnagar Society resident Popy Rani.
Industrial users also reported better conditions. Md Adam Ali, manager of Nava Knit Composite Ltd, said the factory experienced a single power outage lasting just over an hour today, compared with frequent disruptions last week.
"We experienced one power cut today that lasted one hour and five minutes. Electricity went off at 11:15am and was restored at 12:20pm. Compared with last week, the situation appears to have improved," he said.
Akteruzzaman Laskar, senior general manager of Dhaka Palli Bidyut Samity-1, said the area had faced load-shedding of up to 125MW during peak shortages last week, but the situation had improved considerably since the beginning of July.
