The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday protested at and expressed deep concern over the fuel price hike, saying that it would increase the sufferings of the common people.

The party’s secretary general, Mia Golam Parwar, made the remarks in a press statement issued a day after the government announced an increase in fuel oil prices by 15 to 16 per cent, effective from Sunday.

He said that transport fares and the prices of all sorts of essential commodities would increase due to the fuel price hike.

Parwar said that the fuel price hike would have an adverse impact on the agricultural sector, as the cost of irrigation and the prices of agricultural inputs would increase.

He urged the government to reconsider the decision to hike fuel prices, considering the sufferings of the people.
