A fire broke out at a five-storey building in Karwan Bazar’s Kathpotti in Dhaka at 10:28pm.

Four fire engines went to the SK Rahman Timber Traders building and were trying to douse the blaze, said Md Shahjahan, duty officer of control room at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters.

The fire started inside a room at the building in the Kathpotti area near the TCB Bhaban.

The Daily Star correspondent went to the spot and found that the third, fourth and fifth floors were engulfed in fire.

Talking to Belal Hossain, a staffer of one of the shops in the adjacent building, it was found that the building is mainly used for carpentry works but there were other traders and agencies and warehouses housed in the building.

There were boards, wood, tissue paper, stationery goods, among other things stored in the building, which are highly flammable material.

The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.

There were no reports of casualties.
