The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has announced a three-day nationwide programme from June 18 to 20 to mark the inauguration of “Nazrul Barsha”, with events planned across all 64 districts and 74 remote or special upazilas of the country.
Speaking at a press conference at the Secretariat on Sunday (June 14), Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said the government has undertaken extensive preparations to celebrate the legacy of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam throughout the year.
The observance follows Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s declaration of the period from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027, as “Nazrul Barsha” during the national celebration of the poet’s 127th birth anniversary in Trishal, Mymensingh.
According to the minister, a national committee has been formed to oversee the year-long observance. A commemorative logo, posters and calendar have already been prepared, while a special postage stamp will also be issued as part of the celebrations.
Funds have been allocated from the ministry’s current fiscal-year budget to support programmes in districts and upazilas across the country. The celebrations will extend beyond cultural performances and commemorative events, with plans to encourage research on Nazrul’s literary works, music and broader contributions to Bengali culture.
The ministry also plans to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Nazrul’s works internationally and expand global engagement with his literary and musical legacy.
Officials said year-long programmes will be organised to highlight the life, philosophy and creative achievements of the national poet, whose influence continues to shape Bangladesh’s literary, musical and cultural identity.
