The government has formed a nine-member panel, headed by the Cabinet Secretary, to recommend measures for implementing the new pay scale for public sector employees, according to a notification.

This panel, formed today, will examine the reports on the National Pay Commission, Bangladesh Judicial Service Pay Commission, 2025 and Armed Forces Pay Committee, 2025, to recommend measures.

The development came two days after demonstrations by government employees demanding implementation of the ninth pay scale recommended by a commission.

The commission, in its report submitted at the end of last month, recommended a pay hike of up to 142 percent for 14 lakh government employees and 9 lakh pensioners.

An additional Tk 1.06 lakh crore will be required annually to fully implement the new wages proposed by the commission. The amount would be on top of the existing Tk 1.31 lakh crore.

In its notification, the Cabinet Division said the panel will submit its report in due time. The Finance Division will provide the required secretarial services to the committee.

Last week, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said the interim administration would keep budgetary provisions for implementing the new pay scale, even though the task itself will fall on the next elected government.

He also told the media that a committee would be formed to review the pay commission’s recommendations.
