Two winners of the April 9 elections, Rezaul Karim Badsha for the Bogura-6 constituency and Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel for the Sherpur-3 constituency, took oath as members of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday.

Both lawmakers, elected on Bangladesh Nationalist Party tickets, were sworn in by speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed at the Jatiya Sangsad complex in Dhaka.

The Bogura-6 constituency fell vacant after prime minister Tarique Rahman relinquished the constituency to retain his Dhaka-17 seat. Meanwhile, voting in Sherpur-3 had been suspended following the death of a candidate, necessitating an election there.

Polling for the Bogura-6 by-election and the Sherpur-3 election was held on April 9, nearly two months after the February 12 national polls.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by prime minister Tarique Rahman, home minister Salahuddin Ahmed, deputy speaker Kayser Kamal, chief whip Nurul Islam Moni, and other lawmakers and senior parliamentary officials.

Addressing the new members, the prime minister stressed the importance of maintaining law and order in their constituencies and urged them to work sincerely to implement the government’s commitments.

He also cautioned against taking the law into one’s own hands, advising them to seek administrative support when necessary.

Speaking to reporters afterward, chief whip Nurul Islam said that democracy depends on mutual trust between the government and the opposition and called for responsible conduct from all sides.

The 13th parliamentary elections were held on February 12 across 299 constituencies, with results declared for 297 seats. The BNP secured 209 seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 68.

The National Citizen Party, part of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, secured six seats, while Islami Andolon Bangladesh won one. Among other alliance partners, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis secured two seats and Khelafat Majlis won one.

Within the BNP-led alliance, Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party, and Ganosamhati Andolan each secured one seat.

A total of 296 lawmakers took oath on February 17, while results for two constituencies remain pending in line with High Court directives.
