The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday said that a process had been initiated to bring back former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed to the country.

ACC deputy director (Public Relations) Akhtarul Islam at a press briefing at theACC headquarters in Dhaka on Monday said that efforts were under way to repatriate Benazir.


‘An official letter will soon be sent to the government of the United Arab Emirates through home ministry in this regard,’ he said.

He stated that once the case documents were finalised, they would be sent to the UAE through the Ministry of Home Affairs via diplomatic channels.

Benazir Ahmed, a highly influential law enforcement officer during the ousted Awami League government, including the mass uprising, was arrested in Dubai based on an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of the Bangladesh government.

The Dubai Police arrested Benazir on June 12.

The Directorate General of the Federal Criminal Police of the Abu Dhabi National Central Bureau informed the Bangladesh government about the arrest via email.

Meanwhile, International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam held a press briefing at his office on Monday regarding Benazir’s prosecution.

There are, he said, around 10 cases against Benazir Ahmed at the tribunal and three arrest warrants have been sent to the government, which will be forwarded to the Interpol.

He also said that legal proceedings in one of the cases against Benazir had already begun while the investigation into the 2013 Shapla Chattar incident was also nearing completion.

Regarding the killing of former Teknaf municipal councillor Ekramul in Cox’s Bazar, he said that formal charges against Benazir had been prepared and would be submitted soon.

Aminul Islam also said that investigations were going  on into seven more cases involving allegations of enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings.
