A Sirajganj court on Friday sent a housewife to jail in a case filed by non-governmental organisation TMSS over an unpaid loan of Tk 25,000.
The woman, Jannati Khatun, 25, wife of Abdur Razzak of Nadosyedpur village under Tarash Upazila, was produced before the court on Friday morning following her arrest.
According to the police and family members, Jannati was arrested at her home on Thursday evening by the members of Tarash police station.
At the time of her arrest, she was accompanied by her 18-month-old son. While the mother was sent to prison by the court, the child was handed over to her relatives by the police.
The victim’s husband, Abdur Razzak, claimed that he had previously worked as a Field Supervisor for the NGO TMSS. During his tenure, he took a loan of Tk 50,000 in his wife's name.
‘We have already repaid nearly half of the loan. I requested the NGO authorities to adjust the remaining Tk 25,000 from my security deposit of Tk 24,800, which I submitted during my recruitment,’ Razzak said.
He alleged that instead of adjusting the amount, the NGO filed a case using a blank check he had signed as security.
Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tarash police station, said that the police were compelled to act due to the court’s arrest warrant.
‘We arrested her after receiving the arrest warrant from the court. On Friday, she was sent to jail as per the court's order, and the child was handed over to the family members,’ the OC added.
