Day and night temperatures are likely to fall slightly across the country from today, although rising humidity may continue to cause heat-related discomfort, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The BMD forecast light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning, at many places in the Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions today.

Rainfall activity is also likely at a few places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, with moderately heavy to heavy rainfall expected at some places across the country.

A weather bulletin issued by the BMD at 6:00pm on Thursday said that the prevailing heatwave over the Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions, as well as 14 other districts, might abate in some areas today.

BMD meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik told New Age on Thursday, ‘Although there is a forecast of a slight fall in day and night temperatures across the country from Friday [today], heat-related discomfort due to increased moisture incursion will persist.’

On Thursday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded at 38.6 degrees Celsius in both Dinajpur and Jashore, while the lowest temperature, 23.5 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Sylhet.

According to the BMD, mild to moderate heatwaves on Thursday swept across 38 districts, including Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Dhaka, Tangail, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Rangamati and Lakshmipur, as well as all districts under the Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions.
