Bangladesh Bank has said that there is no specific limit on carrying cash at the individual level within the country. The central bank has not imposed any restrictions in this regard.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and executive director Arif Hossain Khan confirmed this information on Wednesday (February 11).
He said that an individual can carry any amount of cash according to his needs within the country. Bangladesh Bank has not set any limit on carrying cash.
However, there is a limit on carrying Bangladeshi currency when traveling outside the country. A passenger can carry a maximum of Tk10,000 in Bangladeshi currency, he said.
According to central bank sources, specific policies have to be followed while traveling abroad.
A maximum of $12,000 or its equivalent can be taken out in a year by getting an endorsement in the passport through an authorized dealer (AD) bank.
However, this limit may change depending on the purpose of the trip—business, medical treatment, education or personal trip.
Experts say that even if there is no separate limit on carrying cash in the country, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Prevention of Terrorist Financing Act may be applicable in the case of transporting large amounts of money.
In suspicious situations, law enforcement agencies may ask about the source and use of the cash.
Bangladesh Bank said that the main purpose of setting the limit on carrying currency abroad according to the Foreign Exchange Management Act is to control foreign exchange and maintain financial discipline.
This clarification has been given to remove the confusion that has arisen in the public mind regarding the limit on carrying cash in recent times.
