FIFA President Gianni Infantino has paid tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentina great’s decision to retire from international football, calling his career “extraordinary” and praising the lasting impact he has had on the sport.

Messi ended his historic Argentina career on Monday after making a record 207 appearances for the national team and scoring 125 goals. His international honours include the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles.

Reacting to Messi’s retirement, Infantino shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, highlighting the Argentine’s remarkable achievements and influence on football worldwide.

“Congratulations @leomessi on an extraordinary international career which has inspired millions and redefined the beautiful game,” Infantino wrote.

The FIFA president also highlighted Messi’s World Cup triumph, his status as Argentina’s leading appearance-maker and goalscorer, and his record for the most FIFA World Cup appearances.

“Your magical talent and humility will be remembered forever. Thank you for every unforgettable memory while wearing the colours of @afaseleccion and for uniting fans across every corner of the globe. I wish you all the very best for your next chapter,” Infantino added.

Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005 and spent more than two decades representing the national team. After years of falling short in major international tournaments, he finally lifted the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, completing one of the most celebrated chapters of his career.

His final international appearance came in Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Messi’s retirement brings an end to one of the most decorated international careers in football history. While his Argentina chapter is now over, the 39-year-old will continue his club career with Inter Miami.
