A Netrokona court sent a district-level National Citizen Party (NCP) leader to jail on Wednesday in a case filed over allegations of taking money, promising to arrange government family cards.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Shah Paran rejected the bail application of Sadia Islam, 23, and passed the order after police produced her before the court this afternoon, said Officer-in-Charge Abul Khayer of Netrakona Sadar Model Police Station.

Sadia is a third-year honours student at Netrakona Government College and serves as organising secretary of the district NCP.

She was taken into custody yesterday after she was detained by locals and later handed over to police.

He said during interrogation Sadia admitted to the crime.

According to police and locals, Sadia allegedly took money from several people by assuring them that she would arrange family cards for them. On Tuesday afternoon, locals detained her at a house in the Balainagua Mirbari Road area and handed her over to police. She had earlier been detained in the Kurpara area while trying to collect money from another person.

This morning, one Priya Akter filed a case against her on fraud charges.

In the case statement, she said the NCP leader demanded Tk 5,000 each from me and four others, promising family cards. "Later, we gave Tk 3,000 each. On Tuesday, she asked me for another Tk 2,000, saying my family card would be ready the next day."

Locals said Sadia had approached several others in a similar fashion before being detained.

However, Member Secretary of the NCP district committee Fahim Rahman Khan Pathan denied the allegations, claiming that Sadia was a victim of a conspiracy.
