At least two people were injured and several houses were vandalised when activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami clashed over a post-election dispute in Natore’s Baraigram upazila today.

​Tension prevailed in the area following the incident, with both parties blaming each other for the violence.

​The clash occurred in the morning in Dhanaidah village under Nagar union, reportedly stemming from a previous altercation between supporters of the two groups.

​Md Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Baraigram Police Station, said supporters from both parties had gathered at Dhanaidah Bazar to settle an existing dispute. However, a confrontation erupted over a trivial matter once both groups arrived at the same location.

​The groups attacked each other with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving two people injured. The OC identified the victims as Hasinur Rahman, Nagar union unit Jamaat ameer; and Ashraf Sarkar, a union-level BNP leader.

​Hasinur was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. During the violence, several houses in the village were also vandalised, the OC added.

​Police, army, and local administration officials rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

​Speaking to The Daily Star, Md Abu Bakar Siddik, secretary of Baraigram upazila unit Jamaat, said BNP activists launched a sudden attack on Jamaat members and vandalised their homes.

Md Razu, member secretary of Bonpara municipality unit BNP under Baraigram upazila, said the BNP MP-elect from the Natore-4 constituency, Abdul Aziz, took initiative to calm the situation.

​Attempts to reach upazila BNP leaders and the MP-elect for comments were unsuccessful.
