A father has formally disowned his son through an affidavit for being involved in the politics of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Jhenaidah.
The father, Abu Zafar, filed the affidavit against his son, Md Nahid Hasan Sabuj, 24, on March 2.
The affidavit was executed at the Jhenaidah District Notary Public office with legal assistance from Advocate Md Sadatur Rahman Hadi.
Sabuj had served as Joint General Secretary of Government Keshab Chandra (KC) College branch of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Despite the organisation being banned by government order, his son continued to be involved in that branch, going against his father's objection.
Abu Zafar said his son most recently took part in hoisting national and party flags and displaying portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina at the abandoned district Awami League office on February 21.
Following the incident, he expelled his son out from his house and said that he would not take responsibility for any future illegal activities related to him.
Nasir Uddin, a resident of Aaruakandi village, said the family faced administrative pressure after the flag‑hoisting incident.
He noted the family’s past involvement in BNP politics and the shift towards Awami League through ties with former upazila leader Shahidul Islam Hiron.
After the Awami League’s fall in 2024, Zafar resumed BNP politics, added Nasir.
Attempts to contact Hossain Md Farhad, president of KC College BCL branch, were unsuccessful.
Advocate Md Shafiqul Rahman of Jhenaidah District Judge Court said such affidavits hold no legal weight regarding property rights, suggesting the father’s move was likely aimed at avoiding police complications.
OC Md Shamsul Arefin of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station has confirmed that no case has been filed over the flag‑hoisting or portrait display at the banned Awami League office.
