Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto admitted his side simply did not bat well in Mackay, refusing to blame the difficult conditions for their dramatic collapse against Australia.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 and 95 as Australia completed an innings-and-51-run victory inside two days to draw the two-Test series 1-1.

Shanto acknowledged that the toss made a difference, with Australia choosing to bowl first on a surface that offered considerable movement to the fast bowlers.

“I think toss is a big factor, especially first-innings batting quite difficult,” Shanto said after the match on Sunday.

“But no excuses, we didn't bat well and they have been bowling very well.”

The defeat came just a week after Bangladesh produced one of their finest Test performances, beating Australia by nine wickets in Darwin.

Shanto said the challenge in Mackay exposed areas of Bangladesh's batting that need work.

“The challenge was there, but I still feel there are some technical areas we need to improve going forward,” he said.

Bangladesh's batting struggled in both innings, with no player making a half-century. They became the first team in 21 years to be bowled out for under 100 in both innings of a Test.

Shanto himself made 31 in the second innings before being caught at long-off off Nathan Lyon, having looked set to lead a recovery.

He admitted his own dismissal was not good enough.

“Speaking for myself, getting out after being set at that point is not acceptable, to be very honest. I should have made it longer,” he said.

However, the Bangladesh captain refused to single out individual batters for the collapse.

“I don't want to point fingers at anyone, because as a team, we didn't play good cricket, we didn't bat well,” he said. “So pointing out any individual batter isn't right.”

Despite the heavy defeat, Shanto said the team must use the experience to improve rather than dwell on the result.

“Taking this experience forward and ensuring we don't repeat these mistakes next time is what's important,” he said.
