The world belongs to those who have information. The richer the country is in information, the richer that country is. And the country rich in information will lead the world to come. Information is stored in a data center. This is a specific building where data is stored and managed through servers and internet connections. Its indirect function is to keep the internet running and its direct function is to store data. All the information available on the internet is stored in the servers of various data centers spread across the world.
Electricity, cooling systems, secure buildings, and servers operating around the clock are major points for the running of data centre in the country.
Over the years, the most discussing issues were connectivity, freelancing, software exports, mobile finance, and startups. Everything was okay. However, with the passage of time, the new topics have come on the table of discussion. So, digital economy’s next phase is more tangible than most people realise. There are so many inter-related things. AI requires processing power while data centres are necessary for computing power. There are some major topics for data centres. These include reliable electricity, functional cooling, cybersecurity, fiber, land design, and a skilled technical staff.
If Bangladesh wants to add to the AI economy, it must adopt a national data centre policy without any delay. Failure to do so will put nations at risk. The country has to stay lag behind and bound it to get benefits from other countries. So, Bangladesh should consider the issue very seriously.
Undoubtedly, Bangladesh has potential resources to move forward with massive success. It has youthful population, growing up internet usage, robust outsourcing, and automation interest. In addition, it has some public data centre assets already in place and private initiatives to construct more. However, none of that make a strategy. It has to keep in mind that a few dispersed facilities do not make up a national approach as it requires cooperation between workforce planning, infrastructure preparedness, and policy clarity.
The government must determine the type of market it wants to create for future. Is it just the government cloud or local cloud service providers? Are banks, hospitals, and manufacturing looking for suitable space? Is it AI compute zones with high densities or sites for disaster recovery to be located outside of Dhaka? Each answer suggests a distinct combination of land, power, and regulation.
Several things must be done
The most important thing is power reliability. Data centres require unwavering electricity, not just electricity. Investor confidence, equipment longevity, and uptime are all directly impacted by voltage fluctuations and frequent outages. Dedicated substations, redundant feeds, backup generation requirements, and public data on outage frequency and restoration time are all examples of the issue.
Location planning comes second. Too much digital infrastructure thinking still starts and ends in Dhaka. That's a risk, not a strategy. Sites should get picked for power availability, fiber access, flood risk, and land stability. However, it is unwise for setting up a data centre only choosing the cheap land.
Environmental planning and cooling are more important than most people realise. Replicating a cooling model designed for a colder climate won’t work in the country since high-performance servers emit a lot of heat. Bangladesh needs water-use restrictions, energy-efficiency regulations, and climate-resilient cooling facilities. These issues should be fixed earlier not after the decision of the plant.
Data governance needs priority. A national strategy isn't the same as forcing every byte to stay inside the border. Some data genuinely needs local hosting for security reasons while some doesn't. The goal is smart rules, not blanket restriction, with clarity for financial data, health data, and disaster recovery.
Connectivity underpins all of it. A data centre without strong fiber is a port with no roads leading to it. The country needs submarine cable diversity, stronger internet exchange capacity, and low-latency links to regional hubs.
Workforce development is the key issue. Data centers need people who understand electrical systems, mechanical cooling, fire protection, and cyber security together, not as separate subjects. From my experiences in the fields of power generation, industrial automation, and data centre operations, I firmly say that the gap between a reliable facility and a fragile one is rarely the equipment. It’s the operating discipline behind procedures, training, maintenance culture, monitoring, and accountability.
Bangladesh needs training facilities for data center technicians, critical-facility engineers, controls technicians, and reliability professionals. Universities and technical centres may take the charge of it. Investment policy should be considered seriously before investing. Is power available? Is the grid predictable? Are permits and import duties workable? Bangladesh shouldn't wait for venture capital to ask these questions one by one. A clear framework should be taken for this.
What's mainly involved?
The number of students who learn python or other apps won’t determine Bangladesh’s AI future. It will depend on how well the nation constructs the physical foundation for everything. Data is necessary for AI but it must be computed. Power, cooling, fibre, and skilled operators are all necessary for computing.
Bangladesh has previously missed industrial opportunities for moving slowly with poor planning. Unlike previous businesses, AI won’t wait around. Power plants and mega bridges won’t be the only examples of the new infrastructure race. In near future, knowledge and electricity will transform data into a valuable asset.
