A 45-year-old man was beaten to death and two others injured in a mob attack in Satkania upazila of Chattogram on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Md Selim, of the Katakhali area, said police.

Police arrested one accused, Md Ismail Imon, 28, early today in connection with the murder.

The incident took place in the Khatirhat area under ward 6 of Charti union, according to police.

Police and locals said a chase and counter-chase took place between two groups following an altercation involving the assault of two individuals earlier on the day of Eid-ul-Azha.

Later in the evening, several hundred people surrounded a house in the Khatirhat area of Charti union and allegedly beat Selim and his associates over theft allegations.

On information, police rescued the injured and took them to Satkania Upazila Health Complex, where Selim died around 9:30pm while undergoing treatment.

Md Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station, told The Daily Star that the victim was beaten by a mob over allegations of theft.

“We are investigating whether the incident was related to theft allegations or if there were any previous disputes,” the OC added.

The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Selim’s father, Abul Khair, filed a murder case with Satkania Police Station early today, naming 29 people and accusing more than 100 unidentified individuals, police said.
