The armed suspect who was taken into custody at the White House Correspondents Dinner has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California, CNN reported.
US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were escorted out of the event on Saturday night after a man armed with a shotgun attempted to breach security, officials said.
According to a Reuters report citing an FBI official, the suspect fired at a Secret Service agent. The agent was struck in an area covered by protective gear and was not injured.
All federal officials present, including the president, were reported safe.
About an hour after being evacuated, Trump posted on Truth Social that the “shooter had been apprehended,” praising the response of law enforcement.
“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job,” he wrote.
Speaking to reporters later, Trump described his role as inherently risky but said he does not dwell on the danger.
“I like not to think about it. I lead a pretty normal life considering, you know, it’s a dangerous life. I think I handle it as well as it can be handled,” he said.
