Uber has introduced new limits on employee use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools after rapidly exhausting its annual AI budget.
According to a recent report by Bloomberg, the ride-sharing company has imposed a monthly spending cap of $1,500 per employee for each AI coding assistant, including tools such as Claude Code and Cursor. Employees can monitor their usage through an internal dashboard, although spending limits may be exceeded with approval in certain cases.
The move comes months after Uber executives disclosed that the company had spent its entire annual AI budget within the first four months of the year. The spending surge followed an internal push encouraging employees to make extensive use of AI tools. Report by The Information previously indicated that Uber had promoted AI adoption through internal competitions and leader boards tracking employee usage.
Questions about AI’s impact on productivity have also emerged within Uber. According to a recent article by Fortune, Uber’s chief operating officer, Andrew Macdonald, said it remained difficult to establish a direct link between AI usage and the development of new consumer-facing products or features.
