A video showing the nephew of the Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated candidate for the Netrokona-3 (Kendua-Atpara) constituency issuing public threats to political opponents has gone viral on social media amid rising political tension in Kendua upazila.

In the video, Jamaat nominee Md Khairul Kabir Niyogi is seen seated at a gathering, while his nephew, Zakaria Niyogi, standing beside him, is heard saying, “If a single voice is raised in the future, throats will be slit. If anyone points a finger at my uncle, that finger will be broken.”

Zakaria is a part-time teacher at Gurudayal Government College in Kishoreganj.

Regarding the incident, Kendua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mehdi Maksud said, “A minor scuffle occurred in the area a few days ago. Following that incident, both BNP and Jamaat appear to be trying to politicise the issue. Jamaat claimed the injured individuals were their supporters and organised a protest, during which this statement was made.”

“No written complaint has been filed in this connection,” added the OC.

The Jamaat candidate said the remarks were made in the heat of the moment and were not intended as threats. “A few days earlier, members of a rival group allegedly tried to abduct Zakaria after a local incident. He was angry, and the statement reflected that frustration,” he said.

“Regardless of the circumstances, such statements are unacceptable. I regret the incident,” Khairul said.
