Leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations in the Dhaka-6 constituency brought out a torch procession in Old Dhaka on Friday night to protest “derogatory remarks” by National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and other senior BNP figures.

During the march, the protesters condemned remarks made by NCP leader Nasiruddin Patwary and demanded exemplary punishment for him.

The procession began in Tatibazar around 9:00pm and ended in front of the BNP's central office in Paltan, where a rally was held.

Speaking at the rally, Dhaka-6 MP and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain said, "We have a friendly relationship with the NCP in parliament. However, the statements of a few individuals from that party are damaging the country's democratic environment."

Ishraque also said some individuals who were previously involved in Awami League politics were now presenting themselves differently.

Urging them to maintain political decorum, he warned that if "indecent" remarks against top BNP leaders continued, his party would be forced to announce tougher programmes.

Former Dhaka South Chhatra Dal General Secretary Abdur Rahim Bhuiyan said, "We are holding this programme to protest the remarks made by NCP leaders and activists about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who was elected by the votes of the people. NCP leaders do not know political etiquette."

Kabi Nazrul Government College Chhatra Dal Convener Irfan Ahmed Fahim also spoke at the event.
