A local Jamaat-e-Islami leader was sentenced to jail for buying votes in Dhaka's Sutrapur, while scuffles broke out between activists of Jamaat and BNP in Korail slum today, a day before the national election.
A mobile court sentenced Md Habibur Rahman, nayeb-e-ameer of the Sutrapur thana unit of Jamaat, to two days of prison immediately after arrest, Md Nazim Uddin Al Azad, additional deputy commissioner of DMP’s Lalbagh division, told The Daily Star.
Police detained him earlier over "vote buying" in Sutrapur.
In another incident, a scuffle broke out between female activists of the two parties in Korail slum. One Jamaat activist was reportedly injured in the incident.
Confirming the matter, Khalid Monsur, officer-in-charge (OC) of Banani Police Station, told The Daily Star, "Female activists of Jamaat were holding a discussion with their polling agents. Hearing the news, some female supporters of BNP went there to obstruct them, leading to a scuffle."
"However, we have not received any written complaint yet. Action will be taken if a complaint is filed," the OC added.
