Google has integrated its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant across several Workspace products, including Google Docs. The feature can appear as a “Write with Gemini” prompt within documents, offering AI-assisted writing suggestions. While some users may find the feature useful, others may prefer a distraction-free writing environment.

Here is a step-by-step guide to reducing or disabling Gemini-related prompts in Google Docs.

Remove the Gemini box in Google Docs

Users can hide the Gemini prompt that appears at the bottom of a document directly from Google Docs.

  • Open a Google Docs document.
  • Click Gemini in the top menu bar.
  • Select Bottom bar preferences from the drop-down menu.
  • Turn off the bottom bar option.

This removes the Gemini text box that appears at the bottom of the document window.

Disable workspace smart features

For users who want to reduce AI-powered features across Google Workspace, Google provides additional controls through Gmail settings.

  • Open Gmail.
  • Click the Settings gear icon.
  • Select See all settings.
  • Scroll down to the Google Workspace smart features section.
  • Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
  • Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace.

Disabling this setting can reduce AI-powered features and prompts across Workspace applications, including Google Docs.

While Google continues to expand Gemini integration across its productivity software, users retain some control over how prominently AI features appear in their workflow. Adjusting bottom bar preferences in Docs and managing Workspace smart feature settings in Gmail can help create a less AI-focused writing environment.
