Muslims across Bangladesh are observing the holy Ashura today with religious fervour and solemnity marking the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
On this day in the Hijri year 61, Imam Hussain, along with his family members and 72 followers, embraced martyrdom at Karbala in Iraq at the hands of Yazid’s soldiers to uphold the Prophet’s teachings.
The day is a public holiday.
Members of the Shia community brought out the traditional Tajia procession in Dhaka, which began from Imambara Husaini Dalan in Old Dhaka.
Discussions on the significance of Ashura are also being held at mosques across Dhaka.
To ensure smooth observance, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken extensive security measures around Husaini Dalan and other parts of the city. Police have banned the carrying of sharp weapons and the use of firecrackers during the processions
