Chief Whip and House Committee Chairman Nurul Islam Moni today said a severe water crisis has emerged in the parliament complex area.
“For the past two to three days, we have been receiving muddy water. As a result, I myself have suffered stomach problems. We will ask the government to resolve this issue,” he said after chairing a committee meeting today at the National Parliament.
He said the demand of water in the parliament complex area is 10 million litres, but currently only 2.7 million litres are being supplied.
The chief whip said housing allocations for MPs will be completed by April 10. “There are hardly any necessary items. Some [buildings and furniture] were made in 2000, while some are damaged. We have repaired those. Discussions have been held on security and all other issues. MPs will be able to move into their residences very soon,” he added.
Regarding the parliament hospital, he said, “We need an ICU ambulance and a refrigerated hearse.”
On the malfunctioning sound system in the parliament chamber, he said they are trying to improve the system. “If that fails, a new sound system will be installed. The investigation committee on the sound system breakdown will submit its report by April 2.”
Responding to opposition MPs’ complaints about time allocation, he said, “We are trying to ensure that. Opposition MPs speak on bills and during budget sessions. Only the discussion on the president’s speech has been equally distributed. They will divide the hours they have been given. I will only provide the names.”
According to a press release from the Parliament Secretariat, two sub-committees were formed.
Rokibul Islam was appointed convener to identify problems with the chamber’s sound system and to examine the quality of food in the parliament canteen.
Nayab Yusuf Ahmed was appointed convener to check the quality of water supplied to the parliament complex and the quality of furniture used in MPs’ residences.
