The family members of Kushtia-3 lawmaker Mufti Amir Hamza were allegedly attacked at Jibannagar upazila in Chuadanga on Monday.
Amir Hamza’s brother-in-law and his driver were injured in the attack.
The incident took place in the Hasadah Bazar area shortly after Asr prayers, while the MP and his family were returning to Jibannagar from a wedding ceremony at Maheshpur in Jhenaidah.
The injured were Abu Bakkar, the lawmaker’s brother-in-law and Jibannagar correspondent of a local daily, and driver Saddam Hossain.
According to Abu Bakkar, the incident began when a battery-powered auto-rickshaw reportedly blocked the road in front of their vehicle.
After a brief exchange between their driver and the auto-rickshaw driver, several individuals allegedly approached and attacked him.
He claimed that the attackers became more aggressive after learning about his relationship with the lawmaker.
Abu Bakkar also alleged that abusive language was directed at both his sister and MP Amir Hamza during the incident.
The complaint named three local residents—Mostafizur Rahman Mostak, his son Shahriar, and Rimon—as alleged attackers.
Following the incident, the police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Jibannagar police station officer-in-charge Solaiman Sheikh said that an investigation into the incident was under way.
‘The police visited the scene immediately after receiving the information. MP Amir Hamza and his family members are currently at the police station, and the matter is being investigated,’ the police official said.
He added that further details would be available once the investigation was completed.
