Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has called on lawyers not to represent the accused in Ramisa rape and murder case, urging swift justice and rejection of any form of leniency.

He was speaking to reporters after meeting Ramisa’s father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, who is currently receiving treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital in Dhaka.

Shafiqur said the child was killed on May 19, the same day he left for Hajj. He added that after receiving the news, he instructed party colleagues to stand by the victim’s family.

He said his organisation had already staged protests and rallies against the brutal and barbaric killing, demanding speedy trial and exemplary punishment.

“The trial of confessed rapists and killers must not be delayed. Delay in justice only deepens injustice,” he said.

He urged that no lawyer should stand in defence of the accused, adding that the incident should not be politicised. “This is a struggle for dignity, humanity and justice,” he said.

The Jamaat leader also criticised delays and alleged interference in the justice system, saying such issues have eroded public trust.

“We want a fully independent judiciary that ensures justice without interference,” he said.

He further said the trial must be completed quickly as the evidence is “clear,” adding there was no justification for delay.

He also said that on June 7, when the national budget session begins, he would speak in parliament on behalf of all children and women in the country.

Expressing condolences, he prayed for the deceased child and the bereaved parents.
