Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rahman said they prayed for the country’s independence and sovereignty to remain secure.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar this morning, on the occasion of Independence and National Day.

“May Allah shower peace and mercy upon the people of this country. May we all together build a non-violent, corruption-free and discrimination-free humane Bangladesh,” he said.

The leader of the opposition added: “Through you (journalists), we extend our greetings to the people of the country on the occasion of Independence and National Day. Alhamdulillah, we have come to fulfil a moral duty. This is a solemn national obligation; like everyone else, we have come to pay tribute to our brave martyrs.”
